Children who get to interact with animals also benefit. Children with diagnosed attention deficit disorder have been known to have significant improvement in their behavior. Children with autism who interact with pets on a regular basis have benefitted as well, they tend to exhibit more pro-social behaviors and less autistic ones.
There have been programs designed to use pets to help children with special needs. Reading Fur Fun is a program that allows children who have difficulties reading to spend time reading to dogs. The dogs don't criticise or correct the children so they often times feel more confident reading to them, plus it makes reading fun and after experiencing the program children tend to have an overall increased self-confidence. Children who care for animlas usually develope higher levels of self-esteem as well.
Troubled teens can also benefit from furry friends. Some juvenile treatment institutions pair teens with troubled dogs that need to be trained before they can be adopted out. The tends in these institutions usually are able to see similarities between themselves and the animal. The dogs who can change their behaviors end up getting a second chance, which is a very valuable lesson for these teens who are in need of a second chance as well.

Animals can be very important parts of their owners lives. As strange as it may sound many animals have the ability to discover illnesses that their owners have or regulate the problems they have. One boys border Collie was able to be trained to alert the boy when he was about to experience an epileptic seizure. This allowed him to live a more normal teenage life and prepare himself for his upcoming seizures. Other dogs have been trained to detect drops in their owners blood sugar so they can avoid negative consequences of that going undetected for too long or bladder cancer from fluid and tissue samples and there are many reports of peoples pets alarming owners of something wrong with their own bodies at home. There have been reports of dogs paying increased attention to areas of someones body, enough to alarm the owner and get it checked out, some cases have found malignant melanoma and breast cancer.
Infants who share a home with pets are also 77 percent less likely to develope allergies and are thought to have increased immune systems due to the exposure to bacteria carried by pets.

The bond between animals and humans is not a recent development, it has been around for thousands of years. Benefits of such relationships have been documented from as far back as 1790s in England when animals were used to help mental patients. In the 1940s animals such as pigs, cattle, horses, anf poultry were used to help World War II veterans at an Army Air Corps Convalescent Hospital who had suffered mental trauma during war.
In recent days studies have been conducted on health benefits of having animal compainions. Their findings showed that pet onwers had lower blood pressure and cholesterol and those owners who had previously experienced a heart attack had an increased one-year survival rate then those without. Owning a pet also appears to have a positive effect on how people handle stress. People with pets experienced less severe spikes in blood pressure and heart rates due to stress, it even appeared to be more effective then taking medications that dilate blood vessels to lower your blood pressure.
